Making Your Own Indoor Garden

Most people have a preconceived notion that starting an indoor garden would be difficult. This could not be further from the truth. Although it does take a little commitment, the fresh herbs and produce harvested directly before meal would make even the skeptics mouths water if they knew how delicious it actually is! With a little thought and planning, five minutes a day could provide enough for an entire palette of fresh flavors!

Generally, an herb garden is the easiest way to start. This can be as simple and modest as a few pots or planters on your windowsill, watered every couple of days. Aside from the periodic need to fertilize them more regularly than a typical house plant, it could not be an easier way to begin enjoying the great taste of freshness right in your own kitchen. Even during winter months with reduced sunlight, herbs typically only require 5 hours or more of light to remain healthy.

Flower gardens are an attractive addition to any lawn. They can draw away from distracting gas meters and act as a barrier to unattractive foundations. Setting up a flower garden is not an easy task and needs to be well planned before beginning.

The first step is to make a drawing of your lawn. This drawing needs to be to scale so you have a good idea of how many flowers you will need to purchase. This will also help you calculate how much mulch or underlining you will need.

Once you have your drawing made, the next step is to decide which types of flowers to plant. If you want something you can change each year, annuals are your best bet. If you are looking for a continuous look, perennials are the way to go.

Two of the main factors are what type of plant you are planting and what type of climate that you live in, as these will both be very important factors in your planting schedule. Another thing to factor in is the current weather as every year can be different. If you have early spring plants, you may have to hold off on planting them until you are sure that the last frost is gone if it’s a particularly cold year. The best time to start your flower garden varies depending on the type of plant as well.

Compost and Pricking Out in Gardening

Compost and Pricking Out in Gardening

Apart from ending up with too many plants, there are other good reasons for sowing a few seeds at a time in small pots and then pricking out to other pots or trays and avoiding the temptation to simply sow in trays and then weed the seedlings out.

Starting a few seeds at a time gives them the best conditions at the fragile start of their life. You do not want hundreds of germinating seeds vying for goodness from the growing medium, not do you want intertwined roots.

A few good seedlings is preferable to lots of sickly ones, so it is best to transfer to other pots or trays when selecting your strongest seedlings. Also, if space is at premium, large trays can be a problem.

One of the biggest pet peeves for the garden enthusiast is weeds. And unfortunately, these nasty growths cannot be completely avoided – in fact, you could probably ask any gardener out there and he or she will tell you many stories about horrible weeds growing in the garden. However, there is, of course, a way of getting rid of weeds. This is a guide on how to prevent weeds from destroying the plants in your garden.

First of all, if you are already experiencing the fast growth of weeds in your current garden, get rid of them first! There is no point trying to destroy new weeds if there are already fast-growing ones invading your garden in the first place. Whether you end up digging them up, chopping them, or hoeing them, you’ll have to do whatever it takes to take out the root cause of the problem.
